Setting up and using a Samsung Gear VR headset

The Gear VR is a must have device for any Samsung phone user. It utilizes the stunning screen and high performance hardware within your phone.

You may be asking yourself: How do I set up and use the Samsung Gear VR?

In this guide we’re going to walk you through the preparation, setup and follow through of the Samsung Gear VR which will make you a master of mobile VR in no time at all.

This guide applies to both versions of the Gear VR

Step 1

Preparing and setting up your Samsung phone

Samsung Phones

The key ingredient (apart from the headset itself) is of course your Samsung phone. To start off you’ll need to ensure your phone is either one of the following:

  • Samsung Galaxy S7

  • Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge

  • Samsung Galaxy Note 5

  • Samsung Galaxy S6

  • Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge

  • Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+

If you don’t have one of these phones then unfortunately you won’t be able to progress onto any further steps.

Cleaning and checking the screen

Cleaning and checking the screen

Before we place the phone inside the headset we’re going to want to make sure the clean is tidy and lint free.

This is because when we place the phone inside of the headset, the lens are bringing the screen closer to your pupils, magnifying everything on the screen.

If the screen has not had a quick wipe with a microfiber cloth, you may be able to see things on the surface of the screen that shouldn't be there.

You should know:

Scratches and defects on your mobile handsets screen will be magnified when using the Gear VR, and could affect your viewing experience.

Connecting and removing the samsung phone

Connecting phone

You’re now going to need to connect your phone to the Gear VR headset.

First ensure your phone is unlocked.

Next you need to remove the protective cover from the front of the headset and position the micro usb connection point on the phone so it aligns and slots in with the connection point on the headset.

You may find it easier to pull the lever outwards and slot your phone in this way. Once it is connected you can push your phone towards the headset until you hear an audible click.

(To remove the phone you will need to pull the clasp on the right hand side out and upwards, thus allowing you to slide the phone out.)

Once the phone is securely held in place you can go ahead and place the protective cover back on and place the headset on your head.

The screen should go black and audibly and visually provide you instructions on what to do next.

Step 2

Installing and setting up Oculus software

Oculus Software

As the on screen directions show, you now need to remove the phone from the Gear VR headset and wait for the Samsung Gear VR welcome screen.

Downloading software

This welcome screen should guide you through all the necessary steps needed to properly install the Oculus software.

The installation steps are as follows:

  • Health and safety notice and EULA acceptance ( you will need to tick agree and click next)

  • Oculus install, 17.0 MB (Tap the install button and wait for it to download)

  • Oculus app launch (click start)

  • Oculus account creation (enter your email address and password and then click create account. After this you will be prompted for a username, firstname, lastname and a pin number)

  • Email verification (A verification email will be sent to the email you entered, go to your email and click on the verification link, as soon as you have done this the app screen will change)

  • Payment information (you can choose to enter payment information or skip the step entirely.

  • Ready screen (Either connect your phone to the Gear VR again or browse the Oculus store from your palm)

  • Social and privacy settings (You will at some point be asked to add a photo and set your privacy settings, you can skip through all social elements.)

You should know:

If you are not connected to wifi you will be asked if you want to use your mobile data instead. We suggest connecting to a wifi network before downloading.

Overview and tutorial

Overview and tutorial

As soon as you have completed the above steps you can slide your phone back onto the Gear VR and proceed to onto the welcome screen which comes with an onscreen introduction for anyone new to the Gear VR.

This overview and tutorial will:

Show you how to adjust your gear VR’s focus and ask you to read and accept the health and safety warnings.

Guide you through the use of the side and touch controllers on the headset, along with using the direction you're looking and gaze to select different items.

After you have completed this tutorial you will be taken to the oculus home screen which includes the store and your library of downloaded content.

Step 3

Adjusting and operating the Samsung Gear VR headset

Operating Gear VR

The Samsung Gear VR headset comes with a few different adjustment as to make your experience more comfortable.

We have also included information on how to use the touch controls in case you missed the on screen tutorial.

Headset straps

If your headset seems to be slipping or feels too tight then you may need to adjust the headsets from the sides and top.

These headset straps fasten using velcro meaning simple adjustments can easily be made by pulling.

Adjust these straps until you feel the headset rest comfortably on your face.

Focal adjustment

The wheel located on top of the Gear VR will change the focal distance between your eyes and the lens.

To use this adjustment, look at a piece of text or content within VR and turn the wheel either left or right until it is visibly clear and not blurry.

Foam pads

This headset also comes with detachable foam eye pads incase you wish to replace damaged or word pads.

There are a number of manufacturers creating replacements if you need to change them at any point.

Side touch controllers

You can navigate within the headset by using the touch controls found on the right hand side of the device.

In general you will be able to use the following controls:

  • Touch / slide navigate forward, backwards, left and right

  • Select

  • Back button

  • Up and down volume button

You can opt to use an external controller too.
